Getting Your Child Ready for The Dentist

Posted .

There are many milestones in your child’s life. One of those milestones is your child’s first tooth. The first tooth is noteworthy because that is when you should make the first appointment for your child to visit the dentist. Ideally, the first dental visit should be within six months your child’s first tooth, but before her first birthday. Visits to the dentist should be part of your child’s life early on. If she is used to seeing the dentist for her regular checkups, the dentist’s office will not seem mysterious or frightening. Don’t wait until your child has a cavity or a dental emergency for that first visit.

If possible, bring your child by the office before her appointment. Let her meet with doctor and the staff, and see the examination room. Don’t use the threat of a dental visit as a punishment, and don’t tell her that the procedure won’t hurt. Instead, tell her that the dentist will clean her teeth, and give her a healthy smile.

Before her visit, stop by the library and pick up some books and videos about visiting the dentist. Ask your child if she has any questions about her visit, and use the time to talk about how important it is to brush and floss every day.

On the day of the appointment, she may still feel a little anxious. Let her bring a favorite toy, a small stuffed animal, or her favorite blanket. You can also speak with the dentist about remaining in the exam room, if it will make your child feel more comfortable.
