Nitrous Oxide Can Help You Relax During Your Appointment

Posted .

Not everyone is comfortable going to the dentist. Some people have a very sensitive gag reflex, and others just experience fear and anxiety. One of the most effective methods for helping people to relax during their appointment is the use of nitrous oxide. It is commonly referred to as laughing gas.

Nitrous oxide has been used for many years in dentist’s offices and is very safe. In fact in some cases, it is the preferred method of sedation for children. Nitrous oxide is mixed with oxygen and inhaled by the patient through a mask placed over the nose. It will help the patient feel more relaxed while in the dental chair, but will not put them to sleep. They will remain conscious and will still be able to communicate with the dentist if they need to do so. Additionally, when the gas is removed, the effects wear off within minutes, and there are no lasting effects.

Patients who are interested in using nitrous oxide during their treatment should talk to their dentist. It is a good idea to have a light meal a few hours before the gas is used, and to avoid large meals for a few hours afterward.

If you suffer from dental anxiety and would like to know more about how nitrous oxide can be used to make your visit easier, Dr. Ferrell and his staff would be happy to tell you more about it. If you live in the Lehi, Utah, area, call 801-766-3700 to schedule an appointment at Center Creek Dental.
